Chick Flicks


You use the term ‘Chick Flicks’ to indicate that a movie focuses on love and is usually of a romantic-comedy genre. The term is mostly used to describe movies that are primarily targeted toward a female audience.

Example of use: “We’re going to spend the evening eating pizza and watching chick flicks.”

Beginning in the early 1990s, the term ‘chick flick’ was used to describe a movie that appealed mostly to women. A 1995 article in The Syracuse Herald Journal used the term in a review: “For guys, it’s just another mind numbing chick flick.’ But for us, the members of the fine female sex, ‘Now and Then’ is a funny, touching story where we can see a it of ourselves and our friends in the characters."
