How do I log in to Ginger Spell?

Click on the  button in the Ginger Toolbar.

The settings screen will open.

Enter your User Name and Password and press OK.

If you have forgotten your password, click the Forgot Your Password? link to retrieve it.

You only have to log in to Ginger Spell once. If multiple individuals use Ginger Spell on the same computer, we recommend that each user log out at the close of their session, so as to enable Ginger Spell to personalize users’ correction and progress reports.

How do I correct a sentence?

1. Place your cursor inside a sentence and press F2 or click the  button in the Ginger Add-In toolbar.

2.At the first stage of correction, Ginger Spell identifies incorrectly spelled words in a selected sentence and corrects them.

After reviewing your corrections, click the  button to apply the change. (If your sentence does not contain spelling mistakes, Ginger Spell automatically moves to the second correction stage. See next step).

3.  At the second correction stage, Ginger Spell detects and corrects misused words – words that are not misspelled, but are wrong in the context of this particular sentence. After reviewing your corrections, click the   button to apply the change.

4.  Ginger Spell will automatically start correcting the next sentence in the document.

Note: You can stop the correction process at any time, by clicking the   button. The text in your document will remain as is.

Please explain all the different colors of words.

Ginger Spell highlights corrections using different colors and styles.

The sentence you are correcting appears in two text boxes. The original text is in the upper box, and the corrected text in the lower box.

Words that need to be fixed appear dark red in the upper textbox.

Suggested corrections appear in the lower text box, highlighted according to three types of corrections:

Words in blue are corrections automatically made in high confidence according to the context of the sentence.

Words underlined in red* should be reviewed by the user and crosschecked against the offered alternatives.

Words underlined in black indicate a suggested word replacement.

*If your automation level is set to high [see related help item], these words will be automatically replaced and highlighted blue.

How do I choose an alternative correction?

When you click on a word that Ginger Spell has highlighted in your corrected sentence, a list of alternatives will appear on the textbox on the right of the Ginger Spell panel:

If you want to use one of the suggested words rather than the automatic Ginger Spell correction, simply double click that word.

Note: Suggested alternatives are accompanied by sample sentences illustrating their use. In order to see them in full, hover over the word in question.

Where is Ginger Spell’s toolbar?

The Ginger Spell toolbar is added to the MS Word toolbars. The location of the toolbar depends on the version of MS Word that you use.

In MS Word 2007, the Ginger Add-In is displayed as a small box on the toolbar associated with the Home tab:

In Ms Word 2003 and other MS Word versions, the Ginger Add-In is displayed as part of the standard toolbar:

What does 'higher automation of error correction' mean?

Ginger Spell offers two modes of text review:

The default level of error correction is ‘low’. In default mode, automatic corrections are performed, but sometimes the user is asked to review alternatives. In those cases, the original word is not automatically replaced, but highlighted red and underlined for review. Default automation is recommended for people who prefer to be actively involved in the correction process.

In the higher levels of error correction, words are automatically replaced with Ginger Spell’s corrections. Users can still distinguish between corrections made in high confidence, which are colored blue, and suggested corrections, which are colored blue and highlighted yellow. The high automation level is recommended for people who desire a quicker correction process without the need for review.

To utilize a higher level of automation, click on the “options” button in the Ginger toolbar and choose "Enable higher automation of error correction". You can change automation level at any time.

How do I revert a corrected word to my original word?

If you want to revert a correction to the original wording –

Click on the word you desire to revert.

Click the  button.

Ginger Spell’s correction is overridden and the original word appears in the corrected sentence textbox.

How do I log out of Ginger Spell?

Click on the   button in the Ginger Toolbar.

The settings screen will open.

Click the  button and then press OK. You are now logged out.

1.     Place your cursor on the blue taskbar at the bottom of the screen

2.     Right click on your mouse and choose ‘Task Manager’

3.     Choose the ‘Processes’ tab and search for a process called ‘WINWORD.exe’.

Click Accept Correction to replace the original sentence in the document text with the proposed Ginger Spell correction.

Click Skip Correction to leave this part of your document as is and ignore Ginger Spell corrections. If you wish to reject a correction for a particular word in the sentence rather than the whole sentence, please see related help item.
