How does Ginger Spell help people with dyslexia?
Ginger Software’s technology is designed with people with dyslexia in mind. It is aimed to correct the kind of unusual spelling mistakes common to people with dyslexia. Our software is tested on texts written by people with dyslexia, and we measure our success by our ability to correct their errors. We understand the writing difficulties that people with dyslexia face and provide them with features that can help them overcome these difficulties, such as automatic correction of multiple mistakes within one sentence, sample sentences, Text-To-Speech (coming soon) etc.
How does Ginger Spell differ from standard spell-checkers?
Ginger Spell corrects multiple spelling mistakes at once. Unlike other spell-checkers, which present the user with a long list of alternative words to choose from, Ginger Spell automatically corrects multiple mistakes within a sentence with a single click of a button. Hence, not forced to choose each word individually from a list of alternatives for each error, the writer can work more easily and efficiently. Only in a few cases does the user need to make a choice, and in those cases, Ginger Spell provides a carefully selected few alternatives, each accompanied with a sample expression so that the user can understand the differences among them and thereby make an intelligent choice.
Ginger uses sentence context to correct the text. By analyzing the context of each sentence, Ginger Spell is able to correct even very unusual spelling mistakes, such as those common to people with learning difficulties like dyslexia, which other spell-checkers are not able to decipher. The context also helps Ginger Spell correct misused words, words that are correctly spelled but not used correctly. Ginger Spell can also correct commonly split or merged words*: for example, the words ‘bed room’ are spelled correctly but should be written as ‘bedroom,’ while “a lot” is often mistakenly written “alot.” Ginger Spell also evaluates grammar*, capitalization*, and more.

Can Ginger Spell help me learn from my mistakes?
Ginger Spell is designed to help users learn from their mistakes and improve their writing over time by providing a positive, successful writing experience. Ginger displays the writer’s work both before and after correction, thus enabling the writer to see where errors occur and how they may be fixed or avoided. Likewise, sample sentences and definitions for the different alternatives encourage writers to see linguistic nuances and expand their means of expression. Another aid is our Text-To-Speech ability (coming soon) that allows a user to hear their sentences before and after correction.
Finally, users can view reports quantifying their frequent errors* in which Ginger Spell statistically analyzes their errors over time, thus allowing them to concentrate on the areas where help and practice are needed most.

What do I need on my computer in order to use Ginger Spell?
Ginger Spell requires a word processor and an Internet connection. We currently support Microsoft Word (versions 2003 and 2007) running on Microsoft Windows. We are developing other clients that will enable integration with mail programs and Internet browsers. We currently do not support Apple Mac.
Why do I have to be connected to the Internet when using Ginger?
Our product is a combination of two components, a client and a server.
The client is a small software component that you download and install on your PC. This component integrates with your word processor and provides you the interface to our server. This is what you see when you open your word processor.
The correction engine itself resides on Ginger Software’s servers and it is not locally installed on the user’s computer. Our correction algorithm requires powerful computer resources beyond what is available on a personal computer. Another advantage of maintaining a remote server is to allow our users to benefit from free updates of our correction algorithm without the need to reinstall the software. This also allows users to work from any computer and maintain their individual error profiles.
Can I use my login id from different computers?
Yes, you can login from different locations (for example, home and school), as long as Ginger Spell is installed on that computer, and Ginger will continue to track your progress without interruption.
